Top Things to Do in Bournemouth With Kids (Local Guide for Easy Days Out)

If you’re planning a family trip to the south coast, you’ll quickly discover there are loads of things to do with kids in Bournemouth. As a local host (and someone with kids myself), I’m always helping guests figure out how to make the most of their stay. The good news? Bournemouth is one of the best family seaside towns in the UK. You’ve got miles of sandy beaches, beautiful parks, fun attractions, and loads of easy day trips nearby.

Here are a few of my favourite family-friendly things to do in Bournemouth that guests staying with us always love.

Spend the Morning on Bournemouth Beach

Let’s start with the obvious one – the beach.
Bournemouth Beach stretches for more than seven miles, which is why so many families return year after year. The sand is soft, the water is usually calm, and there’s plenty of space for kids to run around and play. The busiest area is near Bournemouth Pier, but if you walk a little further along the promenade you’ll usually find quieter spots that are perfect for families.
Top tip: Pack a bucket and spade and plan to stay longer than you think – kids rarely want to leave.

Visit the Aquarium

If the weather turns (which it sometimes does on the south coast!) the aquarium is always a hit with families. Right next to the pier you’ll find Oceanarium Bournemouth, where kids can see sharks, turtles and even penguins. It’s easily one of the most popular rainy-day activities in Bournemouth for kids.
It’s also an easy activity to combine with the beach, arcades and an ice cream afterwards.

Explore the Lower Gardens

Running from the town centre down to the beach are the beautiful Lower Gardens, one of the nicest green spaces in the town.
It’s perfect if you want a slower morning – grab a coffee, let the kids run around, and maybe try the mini golf nearby. The gardens are also great for bikes and scooters.
In the summer months there are often events and family activities happening here too.

Head to Alum Chine for the Best Playground

If you ask locals where the best playground in Bournemouth is, most will say Alum Chine Beach.
Right next to the beach you’ll find a fantastic pirate-ship themed playground with swings, slides and lots of space for kids to climb and explore.
You can easily combine this with a beach walk or a stop at one of the cafés along the promenade.
For families staying in Westbourne, this is also one of the closest and best beaches for kids.

Take a Day Trip from Bournemouth

One of the best things about staying in Bournemouth is how many amazing places are nearby.
Within a short drive you can explore:
• New Forest National Park – famous for its wild ponies
• Jurassic Coast – perfect for fossil hunting
• Swanage and the Purbeck Hills
The Jurassic Coast is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a brilliant place for kids to hunt fossils, explore beaches and discover hidden coves.

Where to Stay in Bournemouth With Kids

Choosing the right location can make a big difference to your trip.
We personally love Westbourne, which is slightly quieter than the town centre but still close to the beach and all the main attractions. It has great cafés, playgrounds and easy access to places like Alum Chine.
