Best Areas to Stay in Bournemouth for Families | Westbourne Guide

Why Westbourne Is Our Top Pick for Families

We may be biased, but for families we genuinely think Westbourne offers the best balance.

You are close to the beach, playgrounds, cafés, supermarkets and town centre, but without the noise and crowds of staying right in central Bournemouth.

It is especially good if you want a family-friendly holiday apartment in Bournemouth, somewhere with your own kitchen, extra space and an easier routine with children.

That is exactly why our Westbourne holid

If you’re planning a family holiday in Bournemouth, choosing the right area to stay can make a huge difference to how easy and enjoyable your trip feels.

There are plenty of great places to stay across Bournemouth, but some areas are definitely better than others when you’re travelling with kids. Being close to the beach, parks, cafés and family-friendly attractions just makes everything easier.

If you’re wondering about the best area to stay in Bournemouth for families, here’s my local take on the best spots.

Westbourne – The Best Area for Families

If I had to pick just one area, it would be Westbourne.

It’s got that really nice balance of being close to everything, but without the chaos of the town centre. You’re right near Alum Chine Beach, one of the best family-friendly beaches in Bournemouth, and still only a short trip into Bournemouth, Branksome and the rest of the coast.

Westbourne itself has more of a village feel, with loads of independent cafés, restaurants and shops, and everything you need within walking distance. It just feels easy staying here especially if you’re looking for family-friendly accommodation in Bournemouth.

Why I love Westbourne:

  • Close to Alum Chine Beach
  • Quieter than the town centre
  • Easy access to the seafront
  • Great cafés, takeaways and local shops
  • A more relaxed base for families
  • Lollipops soft play café & local playground
  • The Dorset Breezer bus route runs straight through

For younger kids especially, it’s ideal. You can enjoy everything without dealing with the noise and busyness of the main strip.

Bournemouth Town Centre – Best for Attractions

If you want to be right in the middle of everything, the town centre is the obvious choice.

You’ve got the beach, pier, Lower Gardens, Oceanarium and RockReef all in one place, so there’s always something to do. It’s perfect for that classic Bournemouth family holiday, where you’re out and about all day.

You’re also right by the BIC, which is handy if you’re coming with grandparents (built-in babysitters…). You can sneak out for a drink or a show – anything from live music to family shows.

The downside is that it does get busy, especially during school holidays, and it’s not the quietest place in the evenings.

Boscombe – Best for Easy Beach Access

Boscombe is a good option if your priority is the beach.

It’s a bit more laid-back than the town centre, and you’ve got really easy access to the seafront, pier and long sandy beach. Great for simple beach days without too much hassle.

That said, it’s not the prettiest area in parts. The high street isn’t amazing and it’s had its challenges over the years, so it’s not everyone’s first choice for family accommodation in Bournemouth.

But once you’re down by the sea, it’s a different story – still a really lovely spot.

Why some families choose Boscombe:

Loads of space for walks and beach days

Easy beach access

More relaxed than central Bournemouth

Better value than prime locations

Loads of space for walks and beach days

Southbourne – Best for a Quieter Stay

Southbourne is a great shout if you want something a bit more chilled.

It’s quieter, more residential, and just feels a bit slower paced compared to Bournemouth. Ideal if you don’t want the crowds but still want a nice beach and places to eat.

The beach here is great for long walks, and there are plenty of cafés and takeaways around, making it a solid choice for a relaxed family holiday near Bournemouth beach.

So, What Is the Best Area to Stay in Bournemouth for Families?

For me, Westbourne is the best area to stay in Bournemouth for families.

It just gives you that balance — close to everything, but without the stress. Great beach nearby, loads of local options, and easy to get around.

It’s the kind of place that makes a family trip to Bournemouth feel simple.
