Choosing the right area when visiting the South Coast is important. Having grown up in Southampton, I know it’s a great place with decent beaches but Bournemouth will always knock its socks off!
When you’re planning a short break with kids, what do you want? An easy life! Bournemouth certainly delivers. With fast transport links to London, proximity to the New Forest National Park and the Jurassic Coast, plus miles of pristine sandy beaches, aquariums, mini-golfs, and festivals like Arts by the Sea, there’s so much to see and do for the whole family.
It’s always good to get insider knowledge before visiting a new place there are always spots to avoid. Westbourne really stands out as a fantastic area for families. It’s on the outskirts of Bournemouth town centre, yet still only a 30-minute walk to the heart of town, with a 20-minute walk to the closest beach and a regular bus service.
If you want an easy life, there’s plenty to explore in Westbourne itself: a kids’ soft play, a playground, boutique cafés and restaurants most notably the excellent Ete, and even a Wetherspoons, so you don’t have to cook if you don’t feel like it!

Alum Chine is the closest beach just 20 minutes on foot through one of the beautiful chines. It features a pirate themed play park (linked to the writer of Robinson Crusoe), a lovely Italian restaurant, and, of course, plenty of ice cream for the kids.
From Westbourne, you can drive or hop on the Purbeck Breezer, which takes you as far as Swanage and the stunning Jurassic Coast.
