If you’re planning a family break to Bournemouth, you really are in for a treat. You’ve got beautiful sandy beaches, loads of fresh air, great attractions, and plenty to keep both kids and grown-ups happy.
We host in Westbourne, just outside the busy town centre, so we know this area really well. It gives you that lovely balance of being close to everything, while still having somewhere calmer to come back to at the end of the day.
In this guide, we’ve put together a simple 3-day family itinerary in Bournemouth based on the kind of trips that actually work well with children. Nothing too hectic, nothing over planned just a relaxed few days enjoying the best bits of the area.
Day 1: Westbourne, Alum Chine & Bournemouth Beach
Start your trip gently and get yourselves settled in.
If you’re staying in one of our Westbourne holiday lets, you’re already in a brilliant spot. Westbourne has a lovely village feel, with cafés, bakeries, shops and easy access to the beach, so it’s perfect for your first day.
We’d usually start with a walk down to Alum Chine Beach, one of our favourite family beaches in Bournemouth. It feels a bit more relaxed than the busiest central stretches, and the pirate-themed playground is always a hit with children.
It’s the kind of place where the kids can burn off loads of energy while you actually get five minutes to sit down and look at the sea.
From there, wander along the promenade towards Bournemouth Pier. It’s a lovely walk with loads going on, and a nice way to get your bearings.
If the weather turns, the Oceanarium is a great backup and usually goes down very well.
By the evening, head back to Westbourne for dinner and a more chilled end to the day. That’s one of the best things about staying here you get all the fun of Bournemouth without being stuck right in the middle of the hustle and bustle.

Day 2: Brownsea Island & Poole Harbour
For day two, we’d head a little further out and make the most of the Dorset coast.
A trip to Brownsea Island is a brilliant family day out. It feels like a proper little adventure, especially for kids. You can hop on the ferry, explore woodland trails, spot wildlife, and if you’re lucky, even see the famous red squirrels.
There’s loads of open space for children to run around, and it’s one of those places where everyone naturally slows down a bit.
Before or after, spend some time around Poole Harbour. It’s a lovely place for lunch, an ice cream, or a wander by the water.
This is one of those days that feels like a proper holiday day exploring somewhere different without having to travel miles.
And when you get back, it’s so nice having somewhere comfortable to return to. That’s why we think self-catering family accommodation works so well you can eat when you want, relax properly, and not feel tied to hotel routines.
Day 3: The New Forest or a Bigger Adventure
By day three, you might fancy a change of scenery.
If so, the New Forest is a brilliant option. It gives you a completely different feel from the beach, with wild ponies, woodland walks, open spaces and lots of picnic spots.
It’s ideal for children who like running around, climbing on logs, spotting animals, and just being outside.
If you’ve got younger kids and want something a bit bigger, then Paultons Park & Peppa Pig World is another great shout. It’s one of those places little ones absolutely love, and it’s well within reach from Bournemouth.
Or, if everyone’s a bit tired by now, keep it simple.
Head back to the beach, stroll through the Lower Gardens, grab an ice cream, and enjoy a slower final day. Sometimes those are the best ones.

Why We Think Westbourne Is the Best Base
We are obviously a little biased, but we genuinely think Westbourne is one of the best places to stay in Bournemouth with kids.
It’s quieter than the town centre, but still really close to the beach and attractions. You’ve got good cafés, local shops, playgrounds, buses, and everything just feels easy.
Our own family-friendly holiday lets in Westbourne are designed to make stays easier too. We know how much difference it makes having the right space, a kitchen, and somewhere comfortable after a busy day out.
Whether you choose The Sprinkle Pad or The Westbourne Nest, you’re getting a great location and a much more relaxed way to enjoy Bournemouth.
